The Problem Of God – Symposium on February 17th & 18th

The following is a press release we’ve received on the upcoming symposium:

What is the problem with God?  Is God a Moral Monster as some assert?  One New York Times best-selling author writes: “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”  Why does God allow pain and suffering…and sometimes even seem responsible for it.  Come join us  for an event at the Loeb Playhouse on Friday, Feb. 17th at 7pm titled, “is God a Moral Monster? Good, Evil, and the Old Testament,” followed by an all-day Symposium addressing similar topics with over a dozen talks on hell, sex, science, religious diversity, Islam, Politics, unanswered prayers, etc., on Purdue’s campus and at Covenant Church on the 18th.  Presenters are professors, pastors, and campus ministers.  See attachment and invite members of your ministry to put this on their calendars.  This will be an opportunity to stimulate your mind and heart.

The Keynote speaker is Philosopher and Theologian, Paul Copan. He has authored ten books and edited about a dozen more and is published in a variety of peer review journals.  His most recent book addresses many “problems” said to exist in the Old Testament and offer a question about God’s very existence: Is God a Moral Monster? The New Atheists and the Strange World of Old Testament Ethics.

On Friday evening, February 17th at 7:00pm Dr. Copan will speak on “Is God a Moral Monster? Good, Evil, and the Old Testament” at Purdue’s Loeb Playhouse.

On Saturday morning February 18th Dr. Copan will give a plenary lecture on “The Problem of Evil, Pain and Suffering” at Covenant Church.  Following this are ten individual Breakout Sessions with distinct talks by ten different teachers (professors, pastors, and campus ministers), who will address the following topics:

“The Problem of”:

  • -God in the Qur’an and the Bible.
  • -The Church: A Broken System of Religiosity & Hypocrisy.
  • -Miracles: Answering Skeptics and Critics.
  • -Money: Can Christianity Contribute to the Rebuilding of Business Morality in China?
  • -Religious Diversity: Why All Religions Can’t Be True…Or Can They?
  • -Origins: Does God know about the Big Bang?
  • -The Silence of God: If a Loving God Exists, Then Why isn’t He More Obvious?
  • -Faith in Politics: Social Justice, Justice, and Worlds Colliding.
  • -Hell: Why Does God Seem Judgmental and Intolerant?”
  • -Skepticism about God: How Can Knowledge Claims Regarding God be Credible?

On Saturday afternoon Dr. Copan will speak on “The Problem of the Christian Treatment of Homosexuality: What are the Problems?” at Purdue’s Lily 1105 followed by a panel response.  The Breakout Sessions presented in the morning will follow once again.  Who do you know that can benefit from coming any of these discussions?  Come, join us and challenge your mind and heart…..
